Fourth class visit the RV Celtic Explorer!

On Thursday the 25th of May, Fourth class were invited to a private tour of Ireland’s National research vessel the Celtic Explorer as it docked in the Galway Harbour.

We met the crew and scientists that work on the vessel and the Remotely Operated Holland 1.

We visited the Dry Lab, where scientists collect data from the ocean that is used to produce maps of Ireland’s seabed. We also visited the Wet Lab, where scientists collect marine samples and research marine species that live deep in the ocean. We were allowed to hold a small sample of water dated at 450 years old and worth €28,000!

One of our favourite moments was sitting in the Captain’s seat on the bridge and using his binoculars! We really enjoyed the day and learned so much about the the ocean.

Turas Scoile

1st and 2nd Class enjoyed a wonderful school tour recently to Athenry Heritage Centre and Turoe Pet Farm. In Athenry, we engaged in a number of fun filled activities, including a maze race, archery and we then dressed up in costumes and learned what life was like in medieval times.

From there, we ventured on to Turoe Pet Farm, where we enjoyed playing in the soft play area, a tour to see all the animals living in Turoe and finally some fun on an enormous bouncing castle.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day and the weather added to the occasion. Thanks to everyone who made our school tour possible.

Project Details:
TULCA and the Marine Institute's Explorers Education Programme have collaborated producing an art- marine science installation and short film called "Build your own Unknown" with artist Louise Manifold and with pupils from Cregmore national school, Co. Galway.
The project involves a re-enactment of the 2011 discovery of the Moytirra deep-sea hydrothermal vent field, originally found along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, north of the Azores 3000m under the ocean. Students, teacher, artist and scientist, learn and work together in the classroom as co-creators and collaborators embedding ICT and creativity throughout the project.

The project will also result with the development of education lesson plans and resources for the Explorers Education Programme™ which will be available on www.explorers.ie later this year. “Build your own Unknown video and installation will be exhibited at SeaFest 2017 June 30th – July 2nd.

The Explorers Education Programme is supported by the Marine Institute, and funded under the Marine Research Programme by the Irish Government. More Info see: http://tulcafestival.com/marine-institute/'
