4th Class visit to the River Clare

This week we walked down to the river bank of our local river, the River Clare on a beautiful sunny day. Kevin and his team from Inland Fisheries Ireland  were there to greet us at the riverbank. They spoke to us on the importance of our river has on our local area. They showed us how to take a 'kick sample' on the river bed. They explained that this was to check and see what insects, fish and other creatures are in our river. This indicates how healthy a river is. We found a lot of stone-flies and other insects which indicates that our river is a clean, healthy environment for fish, and is pollution free at present. They showed us 'electric fishing', where they caught various species. We identified eel, salmon, perch and trout. We used fact sheets to identify the fish and insects found in the river. What a great day we had at the riverbank!!

Cregmore NS Leading the Way in Cross-Curricular ICT Integration!

On Thursday April 27th, Ms. Herwood worked with Mr. Mc Namara, who is currently on secondment with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST), to record the fantastic work we have been doing in relation to how we use ICT to support teaching and learning across the curriculum.

We filmed two best practice videos for the PDST in this regard; One outlining the Fís animation making process and another to document the features of our 'Build Your Own Unknown' project with TULCA and The Marine Institute.

Below you can see a sample of shots from our day filming our ICT-based work. These videos will be shown to teachers across the country as samples of what can be achieved when embracing ICT in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning.

Documenting Fís in Action:

Researching our topic using the Microsoft Surface RT's

Recording the storyboard construction stage

Using Stop Motion Studio Pro on the iPad to shoot our animations

Answering questions on the learning gained from the animation making process.

Documenting our 'Build Your Own Unknown' Project with TULCA & The Marine Institute

Using the underwater GoPro and iPad app to capture sub-aqua footage

Skyping artist Louise Manifold on the Celtic Explorer

Engaging in activity: Using Microsoft Surface RT's to research

Filming the student voice in outlining the project's features
