Engineer's Week 2017

Sincere thanks and grateful appreciation to M.J McNulty who came to our school to celebrate Engineer’s Week 2017. M.J delivered a fascinating account of his role as an electronic engineer at Valeo in Tuam, Co. Galway. M.J. showed us an array of circuit boards, parking cameras, schematic drawings, printed circuit boards, the camera lens (correctly known as the ‘fish eye’), the E.C.U, the microprocessor, the multi-metre (which measures voltage across batteries) and the oscilloscope. His wonderful presentation has certainly inspired many of our pupils to be engineers of the future! Here are some of the things we learned:

·                     A parking camera/sensor for a car has up to 1,000,000 pixels

·                     A human eye has up to 376,000,000 pixels

·                     Valeo make parking sensors for Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi & Porsche

·                     Valeo make more than 1000 cameras per day

·                     There are different types of engineers = Electronic, Mechanical, Software & Civil, to mention but a few

M.J also shared his knowledge about branch exchanges and ventilators. Children were captivated by his account.

Huge thanks to Richie O’ Sullivan, who came to visit us today to celebrate Engineers Week 2017. Ritchie, a medical engineer, gave the children a great insight into what his job entails. Ritchie also explained to us what engineers do, types of engineers and how we can become engineers. Ritchie told us how, topics and subjects that we learn in school today can help us in the future, in the world of engineering.

Ritchie showed us some of the medical devices, designed to help people, who may have a blockage in their body. Ritchie told us that he works closely with hospitals to ensure that this devices are suitable for all. He then showed us stents, and we even got to have a game with them!

We then conducted an experiment, creating static electricity, using our bodies and a balloon, we had great fun and we discussed how we could conduct this and many other experiments in our own home.

We thank Ritchie sincerely for his time, we learned a huge amount about engineering today, how it is part of our lives every day and in our own way, we too are engineers!

Cinquain Spring Poems

Writing poetry about Spring is a wonderful way to usher in the new season. Third class learned the skill of writing cinquain poems which are 5 line poems which do not rhyme. They are very enjoyable to write as they require you to use nouns, verbs and adjectives and follow a set pattern,

Third Class enjoyed exploring Spring nouns, verbs and adjectives. They wrote fantastic poems using the following rules:

Line 1: One word giving the title (Noun)
Line 2: Two words describing the title (adjectives)
Line 3: Three words that express the action (Verbs)
Line 4:Four words to describe the noun more
Line 5: One word that gives the title a different name (synonym)

The following are a selection of some of the children's poems:

Our poems are displayed in our lovely 'Spring' window showing all the wonderful words we can use to describe Spring!

The 'Skype's' the limit!

Pupils really enjoyed participating in a skype call with Moycullen N.S. Boys and girls sang to one another and compared their school experiences.

World Book Day 2017

Colourful  costumes on World Book Day.

Scoil Padraig Naofa was awash with colour and the excitement was palpable on World Book Day 2017. Every child deserves due credit for the tremendous effort that was made. Great enjoyment was had by all. Well done to both children and parents alike.

Excellent Ella!

Congratulations & well done to Ella Hannon who won 4 medals at the Special Olympics gymnastics competition on the 1st March 2017. We are very proud of her achievement.

World Book Day 2017

World Book Day takes place on March 2nd 2017. On this day pupils are invited to ‘dress up’ as their favourite book character. We hope that pupils enjoy creating their costumes with whatever clothing and materials that are available at home.  As usual, the more creative the better! We do not expect parents/pupils to purchase additional costumes/materials for this event.

Ash Wednesday - The Beginning of Lent

Fr. Des visited the school on Ash Wednesday, 1st March 2017. Throughout this visit he discussed the season of Lent and distributed ashes to the pupils and teachers of the school. Many thanks to Fr. Des for his kindness and for helping us to create such a caring ethos throughout our school. It is very much appreciated.
