Gong Hey Fat Choy!

We recently celebrated Chinese New Year. We took part in many activities, in order to celebrate 2017, the year of the rooster.

We each found out a fact about China. Did you know.......

·        -Beijing is the capital of China.
·        -Sticky rice was used as the mortar for building the Great Wall of China.
-Approximately 38 babies are born in China each minute of the day.
·        -Half of all pigs on earth live in China.

As you can see from the photos, we also had lots of fun taking part in a ‘chopstick challenge’!

Join us for our 10 @ 10

On February 10th at 10am our school will be participating in the Operation Transformation 10@10. All staff and students will be joining together in our school hall to get active for 10 minutes.

This will be done in order to promote fitness throughout the school and to enhance concentration in class. We are encouraging all teachers and students to get active in their classes daily for 10 minutes at 10 o' clock.

Operation Transformation has put together a video to help us to get active in the classroom. You can find the link to this on www.rte.ie/ot .

We give our 10@10 10 out of 10..and we hope you do too!

'Brigid brings the Spring'

The first day of February is St. Brigid’s Day. We celebrated this occasion throughout the school by singing songs to St. Brigid, setting up a sacred space dedicated to St. Brigid and constructing St. Brigid’s crosses. The distinctive St. Brigid’s Cross, made from woven rushes, is thought to keep harm, fire and hunger from the homes in which it is displayed. We have many on display throughout our school.

Cregmore Soccer League

Well done to Rory Casserly's soccer team on winning first prize in out soccer league.  Tadgh Joyce's team won the shield.  Well done to all involved.

Go GAA!

Sincere thanks to the Turloughmore Hurling Club who recently presented an array of hurls and sliotars to our school. There is a strong ethos of hurling throughout the school – which is also reflected in our school crest. We are really looking forward to using the equipment during hurling and camogie training sessions. They will help to enhance our skills and enable us to have lots of fun!! The Hungry Caterpillar!

We really enjoyed exploring the story of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’.

How Schools Have Changed

Then and Now.

We have been very busy conducting interviews with our parents and grandparents. We are gathering information, to help us compare and contrast school now, to when an older family member went to school.

From our interviews, we now know that a lot of our grandparents' schools were a little colder than ours now. They didn't have radiators, and many of them brought a sod of turf with them each day, for the fire in their classroom.

Some of our interviewees were in a much larger class than us, up to 34 children, whereas some were in a much smaller class, even just 5 children! Also, most of our parents and grandparents didn't have to wear a uniform to school.

We all agree that school sounds like much better fun now, rather than then!

Isobelle kindly brought in a photograph to share with us, of her Daddy’s first day at school.
