Third and Fourth Class School Tour

Third and Fourth Class enjoyed an action packed day in Westport House last Wednesday, the 8th of June. Great excitement was in felt the air as we set off in the bus that morning at 8.30 am. The real adventure began on the grounds with a guided tour of Westport House. The children learned of the long history of the house including the fact that Grace O'Malley's castle used to be on the sight of the house. They learned that Grace or GrĂ¡inne Mhaol was the daughter of an Irish chieftain and lived in Ireland in the 16th century.

Third and fourth really enjoyed hearing the stories about Grace including how she earned herself the title 'The Pirate Queen'. She sounded like an extremely exciting character who from as a young girl disguised herself a boy by cutting her hair and sneaked on her father's ship! She grew up to sail around Ireland in her ships, raiding areas for gold and fought any British attackers.  The highlight of the tour was a  visit to the dungeons which used to be part of the castle owned by Grace. It was really interesting to see how Westport house is steeped in so much history and the tour guide gave the children excellent new knowledge to take away with them that day!

After the tour, the children's next stop was the Pirate Adventure Park. There, they had got to go on rides such as the Cannoball Run slide, Pirate Queen Swinging ship and Pirates Plunge! The photo's below reveal the great enjoyment experienced by the children and also the teachers on the fun rides! This was followed by a ride on the Big wheel where they got to take in the breathtaking scenery of Westport. Some children also rode the swan boats along the river. Next, it was time to get back on the bus to venture back to the school but not before a stop at Supermac's for our dinner! The staff there were very welcoming and really looked after us all! It was a lovely treat after such an energetic, active day and everyone enjoyed spending time with their friends while eating some of their favourite foods!

As you can see below, the day was another one where great memories where made.  Thank you to all who made the day possible- both teachers and pupils alike had a fantastic time!
